Hiatus

I’ve decided to go on a little bat vacation for a while so the BatCAST will have to either be taken over by Dvough and Tarken for a while or go into hibernation for a while.  In light of recent events, the way some people are running things and the way people portrait their level of caring about the actual players and the game I decided it is for the best.  I have other things going on between school and real life so that is not the only reason.  Hopefully I’ll be back at some point but who knows.

Dvough’s Directions

Hi everybody!  Thanks for tuning in.  I wanted to a weekly segment but the onus of writing, recording, and editing a weekly piece is simply too much for me to do.  Instead, I will shift the focus of the segments to be written topics, which take one third of the time a finished segment takes.
Please keep the suggestions for topics coming along. Thanks again for all your support! :)

Topic 1: Newbie Fun
Minozaiah tells you ‘My honey got started playing and loved it for a while. But now he’s finding that it’s all grind and no fun. He’s not big on questing, and doesn’t like the “fetch me this; go kill that” routine. What else isthere to do in the game that might help him stay interested?’
Great question.  When i was a newbie, i had a large pool of newbie buddies to hang out with and explore new areas. Also, i wanted to be a party leader so i did a lot of socializing with others to learn about the guilds they played in order for me to build more effective parties.  It’s a great thrill to find a challenging monster and defeat it of your own accord.
I also posed this question to my friend and teacher, Presence.
Presence tells you ‘Bat is semi-heavy on grind, but accepting that, there’s lots to add flavor to it.
Leading parties can broaden the areas you can visit and the things you can do, and adds elements of teamwork into the mix.
You not only have to know your own guild, you’ve got to know the guilds of your party too.
The grind itself can be made more fun if you start focusing more on numbers.
i.e. I made 20k gold this hour, wonder what I could do to improve that number.
Planning runs, learning good cash guilds can all be diverting.’
Presence tells you ‘Exploring can of course be fun. There’s several flavors
of exploration too. You can go for room count, try to learn the hidden secrets
and syntaxes, find certain flavor items that no one uses, eg the punisher, the
poker. There’s also bug exploring, which can make for some very interesting
metagaming. “How can I break this?”‘
Presence tells you ‘I swear, 50% of the time a new shop gets added to the
game, there’s something you can get tps for if you notice it first. I remember
once, I found out the Sesmia merchants would buy mineral nuggets!’
Presence tells you ‘Then there’s building an eq set. Maybe newbies might
try visiting Pietro Decrystato. He gives the gems to use at the newbie
enchanters. He’s just a bit south and one east of pleasantville, and can help
you make your very own custom eq set, if you can master his scavenger hunt.
Spr, hpr, str, what stat would you like to push?’
Presence tells you ‘Maybe one is planning a reinc? How about finding all
the ways you can screw up your character! Take lots of banes and see what they
do. See what happens when you try to kill the hugest monsters you can find.
Who cares, you’ll be reincing!’
Presence tells you ‘Presence takes no responsibility for eq destroyed while
engaging in this behaviour however.’
Presence tells you ‘And finally, the grind really shouldn’t be too
grind..y. All newbies need to know that the more a monster is killed, the less
it is worth. Good play involves finding runs that have many different areas,
that one can move between, that have the widest variety of easily killed
monsters as quickly as possible. That’s a learning project that can occupy one
for years.’
The true flavour of BatMUD is in the hand crafted areas. Each one brought to life through varying wizard’s imagination and desire over the course of 20 years, and the wonder that is BatMUD!

This topic of this episode is Minecrafting
Help skill minecrafting:
Help available on topic:
Skill duration: 4.
Type of skill : neutral skill.
Affecting stats: Str/Wis.
It uses 156 endurance points.
The ability to mine minerals is a notable craft, but to tunnel underground and
create a mine to search for more is the true challenge. The art of
minecrafting is a tedious one to learn, but it will reward you in the end. To
correctly balance your hunger for valuables with keeping your mineshaft intact
requires patience and nerves. The true treasures wait one in the depths of the
earth. Just don’t dig too deep…
treasures. I love me some treasures.
Minecrafting was created by the merchant wizard extrodinarre Acidia
And when I asked him about minecrafting this is what he had to say:
as you dig down, you will encounter monsters, hidden treasure chests,
gems, lost artefacts and anything else that has been buried by time.
If you manage to dig down deep enough,
you will encounter the breach that leads to a dungeon that connects the continents together, which you can traverse with your merchant friends.
beneath there the rock itself is alive, and deposits of precious gems can be found ;) .’
He adds,
oh, and what inspired me to do minecrafting, is actually a game called minecraft :) (minecraft.net), like in that game, you can dig any kind of a cavern you want.
a figure 8 if you will, and anything you find there you can use as a material for building.
This skill was introduced days before I reinced out of merchant,
and while I did check it out, I found that I had barely scratched the surface.
Curious as to the design and approachability of the skill I asked Acidia
Is minecrafting a newbie friendly skill or does it require high % in mining?
is it something that newbies can do as well as trained merchants?
He replys ‘minecrafting is a newbie-friendly-skill. mining, double mine,
tools and such will enhance your results, but since the minecrafting skill %
can be obtained from the mine, it is not exp-relevant-skill.’
Acidia feverishly inundates you with sales and marketing information.
Your mind begins to reel… you wants to buy, BUY, *BUY*!
Yes indeed, that’s the wizard’s sales pitch.
want to know how a player feels about it?
Let’s ask everyone’s favorite Master Merchant, Granny Sprite.
Sprite tells you ‘minecrafting is both fun and can be profitable- If one has the time to spend.’
I’ve hauled as much as 350kg diamond from one outterworld square with mining, minecrafting and mining in a breach deep down into a mine.
One can also find quantities of weenite and other rare materials.’
I asked Sprite how deep she had been into the mines
And the answer was ‘ 40 plus levels down, but one doesn’t have to go down. one can mine n s e w also.’
‘if one supports the mine properly, one can get deep enough to surprise monsters.’
monsters?
nameless beings, dwellers.  grues (shudder).
Though sprite says “even as a merchant, I can kill them all…. eventually….
after lots of running!”
‘and the rats. (rat noise?) one might find nests of rats. lots and lots of rats.’
PROTIP: One can not make a new mine with minecrafting until the ole mine is cleaned out of alllll monsters and stuff.’
When asked about the newbie aspect:
Minecrafting can be very useful for a new merchant.
By mining near the surface rather than going deep, one can minimize risks/monsters and maximize the specific mineral deposit that was on the surface.
Chests and boxes are relatively common at deeper levels, along with monsters of course.
Sprite recounts hauling out as many as 4 chests from one deep mine.
And she suggests Having a BIG friend to help open those chests and boxes.
Ah yes, treasure boxes. Always to opened with a battle cry:  It is a good day, to die!
What kinds of treasures have you found in your tunneling?
Sprite lets us know that she has found both wands and scrolls in the mines;
even one youth scroll. Gemstones are relatively common also (at mid to deep levels on into the breech)
A breech? What’s that?
In the immortal words of geordi laforge that he never actually said:
If you’re having hull problems I feel bad for you son.  I got 99 problems but a breech ain’t one!
Sprite says:
“I’ve never taken the time to print out a map of the breach. I should. I get lost in there a lot.  Taking in a few bags of cheap arrows or bolts helps. They can be used as road signs by labeling and dropping them as one wanders the mysterious breech.
Oh and, The rock monsters in the breach are major cool, especially if one is OLD and remember the  episode of the Original Star Trek in the 1960s thank featured the Horta. (grin) They may well be of special interest to newbie merchants who may not yet have the ability to easily alloy weenite.”
That’s all folks

BatCAST Four

This week in the podcast the sound is a lot better, Tarken joins the usual cast of Dvough and myself for a fun filled podcast with over an hours worth of material.  Our big segment this week is on the merchant guild and we also have two special guest interviews from Redux(on merchants) and Amd(on party leading).  Amd was a little softer than myself but it was a very informative interview.  We also talk a little about our race of the week Thriks.  Next week our big segment is on your Favorite EQ monsters, so email us with your stories and comments about your favorite Equipment monsters in batmud and why at info@batmudpodcast.com.  There is also the poll that was supposed to be up last week, we added this week and will carry that over.

BatCAST Three

I first off want to apologize about the audio, it doesn’t sound as good in my opinion but we were trying new recording software.  In this podcast we talk about a few tunes, we have a segment on Reavers and everybody’s favorite “Race of the Week”.  Dvough’s Directions will come out sometime later this week in a short clip for anyone wondering what happened to that segment.  Next week we are talking about the merchant guild and we will have special guest Tarken on the show as well as have an interview.  So email your questions about merchant to info@batmudpodcast.com, hit up the new poll which should be up soon for “Race of the Week” and enjoy.

“Help Getting Started” the Dutois Way

Have you read “Help Getting Started” and are still not quite sure how to begin your illustrious career as a BatMud player?  Then this is the article for you.  There are many ways to begin but take it from a player who has rebirthed down to zero on two different occasions; there are efficient ways and inefficient ways.  If you are one of those who wants to get the “No Reincarnation” award or doesn’t have the capability to play multiple different classes this may not be the way for you.  But if you are ready and able to succeed on the five continents of BatMud keep reading diligently.

The first step is fairly easy, after you have mastered walking and moving it is time to explore; I suggest attempting something that might get invisibility at some point i.e. The Tiger guild or a race that might automatically learn invisibility or get it in its race guild.  With the implementation of remove leveling, exploration has become a cakewalk.  Essentially just run through every area you can (hopefully invisible) and advance every chance you get.  Exploring all the “safe” rooms in the game will get you plenty of experience, somewhere in the ballpark of 10-12m.

The middle step is the most time consuming in my opinion.  When you are around 10m now it’s time to grind, if you are an equipmentless newbie (which I assume you are if you are reading this guide to aid you) then if you have started as tiger to get the invisibility spell you will be in luck because this is generally the best option for somebody without equipment.  You also can purchase spider sabres (30k max each) which hit very well for the price and go nomad ranger.  Now it’s time to learn and explore with some depth, go to areas consider monsters and learn what is worth killing for experience and/or cash and learn which areas might not be safe or advantageous from a character of your stature.  In a perfect world you can team up with other players and be able to cruise around and test out areas and monsters in this fashion.  When testing out new areas I like to use consider or batwiki (finger milk) which can show you what the monster is worth as well as if it blasts some nasty things.  Mapping is a good tool, if you have a digital mapper or logger this is a very useful tool.  I try to log every time I play and with my computer I can search for instance Oogga and if I have ever killed it or experienced this monster it will come up and I can remember the specifics about it.  Also with logging and searching through areas for good experience/cash monster you might learn pieces of certain equipment monsters.  I know for instance I was exping in an area one day and stumbled upon Kilrathi (the first equipment monster I led).  You can also try to find parties with nice higher level players and log and learn from them.  Try to develop a nice repertoire of areas that you can lead in an experience run and find certain monsters you can solo for cash during downtime.  After this you have to grind for a bit, just rinse and repeating and gaining experience as fast as you possibly can.  With the experience bonus pool this really isn’t that hard of a thing to do, if you empty your bonus pool every week you make 4,2m exp plus or minus based on the experience rate of your character.  At a bare minimum that is around 15m in a month quite infrequently.  As you gain experience and train skills you will become more efficient in what you do and have the ability to reincarnate into something more effective.

Now you have grinded up to 100m experience and you still have had the patience to stay as your first reincarnation, honestly congratulations.  When I had a small amount of experience I used to reincarnate two to three times a month to test guilds and races.  This to me is the best time for you to test a lot of guilds, between this 30-100m gap between being an utter and clueless newbie and you start doing some hardcore style playing.  With any MMO there is a lot of grinding in BatMud, but with BatMud comes the opportunity to play a different style character at the drop of a hat so I suggest experiencing different styles before reincing becomes a pain (For myself, reincing costs at least 6-7m experience and 2m gold each time).  But the best advice I can give to you is to always make experience, if you reinced to crimson at 40m and lost 2m or so make sure you get to 40,1m before you reinc again so you can make some progress.

So what are the best combinations to make experience more efficiently?  In my experiences the best way to make experience depends on what kind of player you are, if you are a leader like I am the best way to make experience is in a leading role and a tank reinc.  I feel when I am leading I like to be a barbarian, I don’t have to ask the barbarian to cry every second and I can worry about the task at hand and not casting spells and prots.  If you like to solo a lot Barbarian is a good option or tigerspider, the ability to dim mak, tiger claw and self-heal is very nice.  Tzarakk is one of the best guilds to start with and I didn’t mention it until now because it wasn’t available to me as a newbie but tzarakk gives a mount at level 1 of the guild and you can generally use any type of weapon (you should be using polearms though).  If you are a follower or like to play a support role, being some sort of healer or support tank is a good option.  Support tanks include sabrebards, Barbarians (it’s nice to have 2 Barbarians in a part so one can cry and one can lure/burn) or some other hardhitting tank.  The best healer for making experience is a clear cut Tarmadruid, druid gives you the ability to drain pool for mana as well as use earth power to make your tanks hit harder.

Throughout this time you have been grinding you should have gotten some sort of room by now.  Although items save on you, you might not want to carry around your entire arsenal of items with you at all times.  Getting a room and chests to store stuff you are using and build another set of equipment will be very beneficial for you in the long run.  Also chesting your equipment will make the casts that a merchant might use on them (protection or feather weight) last longer than if you were to be holding the items through boot every day.

As per the rest, that is truly up to you and your gaming style.  Test out different reincs, explore different areas but most importantly grind grind grind.  If you have any questions you can contact me in game or you can email me at dutois@batmudpodcast.com.  Thanks everyone and stay frisky my friends.

BatCAST Two

In this podcast we talk about the big news of the removal of two players.  We also get into the favorite reincs with a special guest interview.  As well as we introduce our new segment called “Dvough’s Directions”.  Enjoy.

Greetings and salutations!

Does anyone wanna buy a monkey?

Please excuse my frequent changes of the site.  I’ve just learned how all this works and we’re getting it fine tuned.
